Moving mountains

“Am I going to find my treasure” (Coelho pg17) asked Santiago a boy on a quest to find his treasure. The journey starts in Andalusia, Spain and is headed towards the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt. Throughout the book Santiago makes friends and works his way through obstacles that are in his path of finding his treasure. He learns many knew things and progresses in his learning of the soul of the world. Santiago goes through the dessert and finds his treasure and something greater he finds love. Santiago uses determination, adaptability and his open-minded views of the world and everything in it.
His power of determination helped him to strive for success. If he was never determined then the first obstacle he encountered would have made him give up the dream of getting the treasure and his journey to the ‘New Land’ would be a waste. Santiago’s hope helped him in the struggle after the robbery in the market. Its not determination that has helped this hero reach his destiny other powers helped him achieve it. When he was confronted with the decision to either stay with Fatima or go continue his quest. And he chooses to finish what he started and this shows his determination to finish what he started. “I can work for the rest of today said the boy ill work all night until dawn”. This quote shows us the strong determination he has. He wants to get to Egypt so he will work as hard as he can and do what ever it takes. And this determination drove him to his treasure and along side his determination he also had his amazing ability of loyalty.
Santiago was a strong boy almost a man and during his quest to find his treasure he remained loyal to his friends and him self. He stayed loyal to his belief and to what he though was right. He was loyal to Fatima the woman of the dessert he loved he came back to her after completing his quest. And at the same time he was loyal to him self he could have stayed and lived happily but the stayed loyal to him self and his dream of finding his treasure. The crystal merchant Santiago stayed loyal to him he helped him to he had to move on. All the people he met he did not let them down. He never let down the people he was with. “I’ll return as your father came back to your mother” this quote shows that he is loyal to the people that he cares about and the people that care about him. Staying loyal Santiago manages to full fill his destiny. It helps him not give up and quit on the people that he is with. Even though he is loyal to himself and others he still has a very open-minded personality another thing that helps him to find this treasure.
Santiago also uses his open-minded out look of the world and others to learn and gain knowledge that that others could not have because of their narrow look upon the world. But Santiago had this power. He never made a decision that was wrong because he though about it and looked at the many different possibilities there are. His open-minded views can also be shown or proven by his relation ship with the alchemist. To understand what he has to say and to learn what he knows you need to have a very open-minded heart and mind. He also possesses a very open heart and this also improves his relation ships with others. “I also have Fatima she is a greater treasure than anything else I have won”. This proves his open-minded being because he sees more to a treasure than just money and material treasures but he can see the treasure in love. He set out to find his treasure but has his knowledge grew wider together with his mind he was able to see what others could not.


Santiago started off as a boy a Sheppard boy and traveled for many miles to find his treasure. Only to find that it was right in front of him all along. Santiago went on this journey to not find wealth but him self and love. To do so he used his strong determination, loyalty and his open-minded views. His determination kept him going in the hardest moments and stopped him from giving up. His open-minded personality gave him the chance to meet new people and learn and gain new knowledge that others could not because of their stubborn mind. Santiago’s loyalty kept him truthful and with that he could get close to god and this helped him find him self and his treasure. Santiago went on a long journey and found his treasure. And even more he found god, himself and he found love the greatest treasure of all. From Santiago’s journey you can see that if you honestly stick to your dream you can move the mountains that stand in your way.

Santiago Essay Reflection

Determination one of the important characteristics that help Santiago archive is destiny. This is also one of the character traits that i posses that keep me on tract and help me achieve my goals in life. I encounter many problems on my way to success but my will or determination keeps me trying and focused on what I want to complete. When i first went to middle school i was very impulsive and i got into a lot of trouble especially in grade 7. I thought that i would never get over this habbit but with my determination i was able to i never stopped trying to improve on my self. And my determination is still bringing me forward. I know i still need to improve but i have gotten very far. I do use my other traits but this was the trait i use to bring me forward. Just like santiago I use my to determination to help me full fill my destiny. i am not sure yet what i want and i am still confused and debating about what i want to do but i am using my determination to help me with this decision. Determination helped me climb my mountains.
